Carmel leads entering final day

HOPEWELL JUNCTION - One thing has been apparent concerning the 135-pound weight class right from the start of the season - on any given day, with a talented, deep group of wrestlers, anyone can meet with defeat.

"You have to be confident and you have to bring your full game," Rye junior Charlie Trumm said. "If not, you're going to get caught. Everyone has something good. Speno has the tilt and Ramos has the cradle."

Trumm was referring to Fox Lane's Luke Speno and Clarkstown North's Steven Ramos, last week's large-school divisional champions.

Trumm, Ramos and Speno, along with John Jay's Brian DiBetta and New Rochelle's Tom Antonioli comprise this solid 135-pound class. Last week, Trumm thought he was on his game, but met with defeat at the hands of DiBetta in the Division 2 semifinals. Trumm went on to finish third and returned to practice with renewed determination.

Trumm advanced to the semifinals with a pin and a decision yesterday on the first day of the Section 1 large-school championships at John Jay-East Fishkill.

Carmel grabbed the first-day lead with 34 points and has four wrestlers in the semis - Mike Rose (103 pounds), Vin Argese (119), Ken Spost (145) and Anthony Pecora (171).

Wrestling resumes today at 9:30 a.m., with the semifinals at Pace University. The championship finals for large and small schools are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Trumm, who lost to Speno earlier this season, pinned Brewster's Adam Meyer and followed up with a 4-2 quarterfinal win over Antonioli.

"Last week at divisionals I felt warmed up, but I was thinking too much and couldn't get anything down," Trumm said. "In the match with him (DiBetta), I shot and I thought I had the two, but he got it. I hung out on bottom and he ripped me apart."

Teammate and drill partner Derek Creadore was the unfortunate recipient of Trumm's relentless work.

"I went a bunch of full six-minute matches and 10 minutes on my feet every day," Trumm said.

Trumm will face Speno in one semi and Ramos takes on DiBetta in the other.

North Rockland senior Tim Hopkins registered the only upset with a 5-4 double-overtime victory over Hen Hud's Alfonso Rodriguez in a 160-pound quarterfinal. Rodriguez was last week's Division 1 runner-up.

Hopkins trailed 4-2 entering the third period, but evened the score with a stall point and escape with 20 seconds remaining. Following a scoreless one-minute sudden-death overtime, Rodriguez chose bottom for the first 30-second extra period. Rodriguez went to switch and appeared to have had it, but Hopkins held firm control of Rodriguez' leg.

"I was trying to force a stalemate, but I had to do something quick to make something work," Hopkins said. "After that, I saw that my hip was up in the air, so I went to hip over to counteract the switch."

Hopkins selected bottom for his 30 seconds, went for a standup and hit it quickly.

East Ramapo 112-pounder Djimitry Georges was impressive in his two wins. He pinned, and then decisioned White Plains' Juan Garcia 9-3 in the quarters.

Georges will face Fox Lane's Joey Grippi, who beat him in the O'Connell tournament final.

"I didn't wrestle to my full ability in that match," Georges said. "All week in practice was pretty tough. I practiced a lot harder than usual."
